Title: Formulation of prednisone as non-fat milk based nanoparticles
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Qinfeng (Sarah) Liu , Pharmaceutical Sciences

The objective of the project is to formulate prednisone into non-fat milk nanoparticle shells, along with canola oil. This is novel and challenging, as no nano-formulation of prednisone is available in the market. The organic phase to dissolve prednisone constitutes chloroform, ethanol and canola oil, and the aqueous phase constitutes bovine non-fat milk powder. Solubility screening test showed an increase in solubility of prednisone when ethanol is included (0 to 20%). Statistical analysis was performed by using One-Way ANOVA (α = 5%). Further steps involve subjecting the o/w crude dispersion to high pressure homogenization, rotary evaporation and freeze drying to obtain prednisone nanoparticles (desired size range- 50 to 400 nm). Particle size, drug-encapsulation efficiency (EE%) and API content uniformity of the final formulation will be characterized.
