Developed under the guidance of Dr. Bonnie Brenseke and Dr. Terrence Mitchell , School of Medicine
Calcific aortic stenosis has become the most common cause of aortic valve disease and the number one cause of surgical valve replacement in the US and Europe. In recent years, the prevalence of this disease has been increasing, affecting 2-3% of North Americans aged 65 years and older with an average age of 77 years. This case study of a patient with aortic stenosis examines the pathogenesis of the disease, as well as the prevalence in North Carolina.
