Title: A Metastatic Well-Differentiated Neuroendocrine Tumor (Carcinoid)
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Adnan Siddiqui and Dr. Bruce Newton , School of Medicine
During dissection of a 92-year-old Caucasian male in a gross anatomy course, a mass/lesion was identified in the abdominal region. Histological and immunohistochemical analysis showed a metastatic well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor (carcinoid). The tumor was surrounding the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery of the abdominal aorta, which is an unusual location for this type of tumor. Due to the unusual location we assumed it metastasized from the midgut, though a primary tumor was never found.
